All You Need Is Love

The Beatles had a hit song titled, “All You Need Is Love”. I don’t suggest that you go to Beatles lyrics for your theology but they did have another hit song about a book of the Bible….”Hey Jude”. Anyway, in 1 Corinthians chapter 13 the word “love” is given great emphasis. The beginning paragraph of this chapter is this: Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

We can see how important love is. Jesus summed up all the law and the prophets by saying that the two greatest commandments are to love God and to love your neighbor. When we trust in Jesus Christ we are infused with the divine love of God; not only for ourselves but for the benefit of others. Christians can disagree, can engage in culture, politics, sexuality discussions, etc…but ALWAYS with an overriding and abiding sense of love. We can win the point and lose the person without love. Today, grow deep in your love for God. Cultivate the relationship. Read God’s word. And then let God help you grow deep in love for others, especially those with whom you disagree…maybe even that annoying neighbor!
