A Tree or Chaff…Your Choice
Today we are going to begin a 150 day journey through the book of Psalms, the song book and worship section of the Bible . Each day I will comment on an aspect of a psalm. As you read the Psalms, I encourage you to feel the emotion of the psalm and to seek God’s application to your life. Let’s get started with Psalm 1
This psalm is one of my favorites because of its simplicity. The contrast is made between a tree and chaff. Chaff is the stuff that blows away during the threshing process for wheat. Chaff has no value. In contrast, we have a tree that bears fruit in its season and that has a leaf that does not wither. What’s the difference? The difference is in one’s approach to God and the word of God. The “tree” is the godly, the one who delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it consistently. The “tree” doesn’t walk in the counsel of the ungodly, stand in the path of sinners or sit in the seat of the ungodly. Which do you want to be? Please note the contrast here. It is rather stark. I choose to be a tree, rooted in the word and person of God. I want to be able to withstand the storms of life, not blow in the wind. I choose to be valuable to myself and others around me. I hope you choose the same. Be a tree!
