A Few of God’s “Not so Favorite Things”

My wife Janet’s favorite movie is “The Sound of Music”.  I admit that at first I thought it was a lame movie but having watched it many times, I have really come to like it…perhaps it appeals to my feminine side.  Julie Andrews sings a song in the movie titled, “A Few of My Favorite Things” where she lists some things that she likes.  In Proverbs 6:16-19 we have a list of God’s “Not” so favorite things.  Let’s read that list now:

16 These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:  17 A proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil, 19 A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.

Yes, there are things that God hates.  God is a God of love and mercy but God hates sin.  These seven sins listed are often repeated throughout the Bible and unfortunately, they are often repeated in human history.  The pages of the Old Testament recount examples of pride, lying, murder, etc…God hates these things.  Something else about this list sticks out to me.  This list is full of sins that people do to each other.  God hates it when we harm one another.  When we sin against someone we are attacking someone for whom Jesus died.  God is not going to take that lightly.  Anytime we sin against someone, we in fact sin against God as well.

Let’s take this list to heart.  Let’s know that we can’t tackle this list on our own…we need His help.  Let’s be thankful for the reminder of what God’s “Not so Favorite” things are….oh, by the way, if you’ve not seen “The Sound of Music”, check it out.
